Continuing on the success of the companion app experience for F1 we were commissioned to design and build a new second screen experience supporting Sky Sports coverage of the Barclays Premier League season. Built around a Match Centre and including full squad listings, team line-ups, formations and live match data. Providing an intuitive and innovative way of following the game and included as part of the Sky Sports subscription. Up to 600,000 people use the Premier League Companion app each week during the football season.
Create value for the Sky Sports subscription and enhance the viewing of Premier League matches through a second screen experience in conjunction with the on air broadcast primarily focusing on the data elements of live and historical games and players.
The biggest challenge was the data visualisation elements of the app. Due to the nature of user interaction and the complexity of the data, screen real estate had to be managed very carefully. UX/UI was especially important in refining the elements needed for each of these complex areas.
Creative and Development
The challenge was to make the user interface as intuitive as possible creating easily digestible visualisation of live game data and historic information pertinent to the game and the two sides playing at any given time. This involved the management of multiple APIs and data sources as well as creating a new workflow for the creation of assets including player images and team badges.
Due to the vast numbers of players in the Premier League we developed an automated workflow to create and manage the vast number of potential assets needed by the app for multiple matches during each week of the season. We also needed to use multiple data sources from historic to live statistics and player information and marry these up into the data visualisation contained in the app.
The football companion has been hugely successful and has been the most popular of all the companion apps to date. Over 600,000 unique users use the Premier League companion on any given week during the football season. It also is used on air by the football commentators and pundits to help illustrate key points of the game and players contributions.
